Santorini & Athens, Greece 2008

In June of 2008, I visited the romantic island of Santorini, Greece for my honeymoon!   We stayed at Vedema, a Luxury Collection Resort located in Megalohori, a quiet traditional village. Typically, people want to stay in the picturesque Oia but staying in Megalohori was a nice contrast to the hustle and bustle one finds in Oia. There is something special about this village beginning with the locals.  It's definitely not touristy.  A walking village where you stumble upon beautiful churches with elaborate steeples and tavernas serving local dishes. The village is also known for its wineries, we visited Gavalas during our stay. Vedema was actually built around a 400 year-old wine cellar so you must take advantage of a tasting in their wine bar as well.  Guests of Vedema also have access to their private Black Sand Beach accessible via shuttle.   Of course, you have to visit the village of Oia widely known for its magnificent sunsets.  It's only a 30-minute drive from Megalohori.  While in Oia, we stopped in to see Mystique, (sister property to Vedema), located on the cliffside overlooking the Aegean Caldera.  If you do choose to stay in Oia, Mystique is a great option.  Also, be sure to visit Amoudi Bay, 300 steps below Oia.  It can be reached by foot or car but after dining alfresco and some sunset cocktails, a car back up is probably your best bet.  There are so many more beautiful islands to visit in Greece (I will return) but Santorini is a must if you visit.

One of the highlights of this trip was a Catamaran sail on the Aegean sea which included a freshly prepared meal as we sailed.  We also stopped for a swim in the natural hot springs.  I must say, sightseeing from this viewpoint left me with some of the most beautiful images that are etched in my memory forever.  Probably why I don't have many pictures, sometimes you have to put down the camera and take it all in!

I believe my obsession with "Door Pix" started here... ~ Megalohori

A visit to the village of Oia.... even the dog is amazed by the view from up here;-)  P.S.  could not get enough of the grilled octopus.

Before heading home we spent a couple of days in Athens. There was plenty of sightseeing and shopping here.  In need of a rug?  No problem. They have some of the most impressive packaging techniques I've ever seen.  That bag I'm holding in my hand is a hand woven runner, ready to take on the plane as carry on!
