Mexico City, Pt II: I managed to fit so much into my three days in this city. It began with a full day historic walking tour, lunch at a local eatery and a visit to a few museums along the way with a private guide courtesy of @Journeymexico.
Metropolitan Cathedral… the oldest & largest cathedral in all of Latin America. Located in the capital’s main square, known as the Zócalo, but officially named the Plaza de la Constitución. Considered one of the biggest squares in the world, it was an important gathering place for the Aztecs and it remains so in modern day Mexico.
Palacio Nacional….houses the murals of Diego Rivera painted between 1929 and 1951. They tell the story of Mexico from pre-Hispanic times to the arrival and conquest by the Spanish and then the Mexican revolution.
Museo Mural Diego Rivera… where Diego Rivera's mural Sueño de una Tarde Dominical en la Alameda Central is located.
Memory and Tolerance Museum…
National Museum of Anthropology… this museum quickly became one of my favorite museums ever visited. Upon entry, you feel the magic underneath this huge concrete umbrella rainfall. If you look closely at this image, some of that magic pops right out at you. Can you see it? Comment on this page if so….
The Anthropology Museum houses important pieces from all over the Mesoamerican world and is the most visited museum in Mexico. Designed and built by architect Pedro Ramirez Vasquez in 1964, it is considered important for its architectural design as well as the vast array of artifacts that it houses. One of the most important pieces housed at the museum is the 24-ton Aztec Sunstone found buried beneath the city’s main square in 1790.
I’ve always wanted to experience Hot Air Ballooning, but I must admit I was afraid. In continuation of my “weekend of firsts”, I decided to “feel the fear and do it anyway”! It was such an exhilarating feeling that I will never forget. To make the experience even more perfect, we took off at sunrise and glided right over the valley of Teotihuacán, an UNESCO World Heritage Site, while passing over the pyramids of the Sun and the Moon. A must for anyone’s bucket list.
After our Hot Air Balloon experience, as if that wasn’t enough, we were whisked away to an off-site location for a deluxe brunch experience courtesy of At Your Place by Four Seasons Hotel, Mexico City. It is a premium catering service that brings that special Four Seasons touch directly to you, “Wherever… Whenever you want…. However you want.”
Last, but definitely not least, we continued on to Teotihuacan where I climbed my first pyramid! Not just any pyramid, one of the largest pyramids in the world! Appropriately named, Pyramid of the Sun.
I am looking forward to writing a Part III, Mexico City post some day soon because there is so much more to discover in this city.
