First stop - Long Island City, Queens to visit MoMA PS1.
Everyone knows MoMA in NYC but did you know there is a branch located in Long Island City, Queens? A pretty cool one in fact housed in an old school. It is one of the oldest and largest nonprofit contemporary institutions in the USA. The exhibit featured below is called “Theater of Operations, The Gulf Wars 1991 - 2011”. Fun Fact: Admission is free for all NYC residents so be sure to bring your ID.
While you are in Queens, you might as well check out the Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria. It is the country's only museum dedicated to the art, history, technique, and technology of the moving image in all its forms. It’s located right next to the historic Kaufman Astoria Studios. After your visit, you can grab lunch at one of the many great restaurants Astoria has to offer.
If you are interested in checking out some furniture outlets then head on over to Industry City. A historic intermodal shipping, warehousing, and manufacturing complex located in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. Here you will find workshop space for artists, retail spaces and cool food halls spaced out among several buildings. Once I discovered there was an ABC Carpet & Home outlet here [insert me jumping for joy], I had to check it out. You will also find other outlets such as Restoration Hardware and Design within Reach just to name a couple.
There are even instagramable spots like those pictured below which are located throughout one of the buildings inside freight elevators.
There are tons of food options to choose from. I opted for a delicious lobster roll at “The Frying Pan” and it did not disappoint! You can also find other popular outposts such as “Burger Joint” and “Hometown BBQ”.
Visit the chocolate factory where you can get an up-close look at how the chocolate is made… Perhaps you are in the market for a custom made hat??? Whatever you do, don’t leave without visiting some of the workshops to discover new artists such as the pop-up pictured below that features some awesome wire art.
More things to do in the “Boroughs” coming soon… Until then check out my “Things to do in NYC - Manhattan post.
